Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Wednesday, January 7, how Conor Hanson, 20, of Mitchell Avenue, Langley Mill, threatened his mother after she had asked him to leave her home following a stayover with his girlfriend.

Prosecuting solicitor Mike Law said: “Mr Hanson’s mother confronted the defendant who had slept over with his girlfriend on the sofa. When he was asked to leave by the complainant there was an argument and the defendant threatened her. She felt intimidated and called police.”

Probation officer Laura Randall said Hanson took exception to his mother and because he had taken drugs he was feeling aggressive and reacted inappropriately. Mrs Randall said Hanson who picked up a knife during the incident accepts responsibility and said he was ashamed and would never wish to cause his mother harm.

Hanson had taken cocaine, cannabis and Mcat the night before he threatened his mother, according to Mr Law, but Mrs Randall said the defendant has since stopped using drugs.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault on the ground of behaving in a threatening manner during the incident in October, last year.

Defence solicitor Julie Page said Hanson’s mother has been supportive of her son and she phoned police despite the fact there was no physical violence. Magistrates sentenced Hanson to a three-year conditional discharge and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
