A man who was drowning his sorrows after a relationship break-up was arrested for damaging a Chesterfield car park barrier.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday how Stephen Bower, 54, of Derby Road, Chesterfield, had run into the barrier at Soresby Street.
Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “A male was seen running off into a memorial garden after the offence had been committed. He had run at the barrier and caused damage.”
Bower pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage after the incident in August. Steve Brint, defending, said Bower did not expect the barrier to break and he is remorseful. Magistrates sentenced Bower to a 12 month conditional discharge and warned him that he would be re-sentenced for the offence if he was caught committing another crime in the next 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs, a £15 victim surcharge and £37 compensation.
