Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard last Wednesday how Liam Gambino, 27, of Westlea, Clowne, had offered to rent a property on Malthouse Road, Whitwell, which he did not own and had no right to let.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said Gambino and his partner moved into the Malthouse Road property which was owned by someone else and was in a state of disrepair and he claimed they could live there if he carried out repairs.

Mrs Allsop added: “The two victims Daniel Wood and Marianne Mendez looked on Facebook and saw the address being rented for £300 with a £300 bond.”

Both complainants paid out rent up-front and deposits totalling £1,030.

He apologised but said he was in a difficult financial position. Gambino, who has been living in Hertfordshire, pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation by offering a property for rent that he did not own or have a right to let in November, 2015. His case was adjourned to consider reports before sentencing at Stevenage magistrates’ court, on June 20.
