Police said the Belper man, aged 30, suffered stab wounds in an incident outside the Hare and Hounds pub, in High Hawsker, at 10pm.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said a 31-year-old man from the village, which is near Whitby, has now been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The spokesman said the Belper man remains in a stable condition at James Cook University Hospital on Teesside, having undergone surgery for stab wounds.

The suspect was arrested at 1.55am the following morning and an area outside the pub was cordoned off for a forensic examination, which has now been completed.
