Andrew Taylor, 25, of no fixed address, appeared at Chesterfield magistrates court on Monday, September 1, charged with escaping from custody.

A defendant accused of unlawfully escaping from Sudbury prison was found by police at an address in Chesterfield.

Andrew Taylor, 25, of no fixed address, appeared at Chesterfield magistrates’ court on Monday, September 1, charged with escaping from custody.

Prosecuting solicitor John Cooper said: “This case is to be sent to crown court. Taylor should be remanded in custody.”

Mr Cooper alleged that on August 27 there was a roll call at HMP Sudbury, at Ashbourne, and at 20 minutes past midnight the defendant was discovered to have left the prison without permission and did not return.

A search was made by police at an address in Chesterfield where he was found.

Police said Taylor had fled the prison on August 28 but they later found him at premises on Boythorpe Road, Chesterfield, on Saturday, August 30.

Mr Cooper added that Taylor had been sentenced in February 2013 for robbery and was given an 88 month prison sentence and was later transferred to the open prison at Sudbury.

Defence solicitor Kevin Tomlinson said there will be no application for bail because Taylor is being treated as a serving prisoner and the reasons why he allegedly fled prison will be explained at a later hearing.

Magistrates formally remanded Taylor in custody and committed his case to Derby Crown Court for a further hearing on September 15.

Derbyshire Constabulary, who confirmed Taylor’s alleged escape before his court hearing, has also appealed for information about 12 men who either absconded from or failed to return to Sudbury prison between 1992 and 2006. These incidents happened before the force issued appeals to find absconders. Since 2007, Derbyshire police has issued photos and appeals to the public when a prisoner has left custody unlawfully.
