A Chesterfield cricket team has the support of the community after vandals punched holes in the roof, smashed tiles and caused major water damage at the pavilion.

The Whittington Wanderers, who play in Brearley Park, said the damage that has been caused could impact on the club for next season.

Chairman Peter Whiteley said: “We realised there had been damage maybe a few days after it happened but because it is low season there isn’t someone there everyday.

“With all the rain that has got in through the hole in the roof the electric has gone off and the carpets are soaked.

“To repair this will cost our little club - which plays for fun and in the lower leagues - so much money that it may have a knock-on effect on being ready to start the season next year.”
The club is a merging of Old Whittington and Richland Wanderers back in 2005 and the building goes back to the 70s.

Peter said: “We have a tough job getting it fixed up again but we are a community club, scouts meet here and other sports teams and it seems people are willing to help us put it right, however it doesn’t make it any less right what these people have done to our club.”
