A HUSBAND and wife managed to escape after a “devastating” blaze tore through their bungalow.
The couple fled to safety after their smoke alarm sounded because of a fire in the attic of the property, on Skinner Street, Creswell, at around 10.30pm on Monday.
At its height, five crews fought the fire.
Richard Barker, fire officer in charge, said investigators were working to establish the cause of the fire. “It was pretty devastating,” he said. “Seventy five per cent of the house was damaged.”
He added: “If this couple didn’t have a smoke alarm, it might have been a completely different story.”
