Holiday lets given go-ahead

A PLANNING application to convert part of the empty Torr Vale Mill in New Mills into holiday lets was given the go-ahead this week.

Members of High Peak Borough Council’s Development Control Committee approved the plans to convert part of the Grade II* listed building into holiday accommodation at a meeting on Monday.

The conversion of the buildings will involve minimal internal and external alterations to the buildings, councillors heard.

English Heritage, who have placed the building on their ‘At Risk’ register for several years, welcomed the change of use for the site.

The permission was conditional on the satisfactory response from experts about whether bats were present at the site. A number of conditions relating to the materials used for the development are also in force.

Cllr Alan Barrow said: “It is good to see they don’t want to tinker with the buildings.

“Subject to the details of the bat report I would like to move approval.”

Councillors felt the development would sustain and enhance the significance of the mill, an important designated heritage asset.
