To mark the tenth National Recycle Week, Derbyshire Dales District Council is urging local schools to get involved in a new educational project.

Called Recycling In Schools Education (RISE), the project aims to educate the next generation about sustainable waste management.

The district council has contacted all primary schools in the Derbyshire Dales inviting them to take advantage of talks, workshops and interactive lessons delivered by trained staff on the key themes of reduce, re-use and recycle.

Dales schools can also take part in a fun competition to create and name a cartoon-style recycling character – and a catchphrase – that encourages everyone in the Dales to recycle more.

Europe’s foremost wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering, who lives in the Dales, will help to select the winning entry in the last week of the summer term. It will be used to promote the District Council’s ongoing recycling campaign.

The schools’ project background and an entry details can be found online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/recycle. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, July 16.

Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Environment Committee, Cllr Steve Bull, said: “Recycling is a big topic for everyone, not least schools and young people, and with recycling rates in the Dales soaring to almost 50% of all household waste, we want to keep the message alive - that’s why we are committed to talking about recycling to the next generation.

“It is brilliant that Pollyanna Pickering is helping us by judging the schools’ competition, and we will also be urging headteachers to improve their schools’ eco status with useful tips on recycling and composting.”

The District Council’s recycling advisers Nick Jewkes and Natalie Haystead are available to visit local schools on a first-come-first-served basis.

In addition to recycling facts, the advisers have “goodies” to give away to pupils, including pencil cases made out of recycled tyres and rulers made from recycled CD cases!

The advisers are also available to attend school fun days. Nick and Natalie can be contacted by email at waste@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or by phone on 01629 761122.
