Police in Chesterfield are appealing for residents to be vigilant following a number of purse thefts in and around the market place in the town centre.

Officers would like to make people aware of this issue and are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

Sgt Les Rawson who is based within the police Community Safety Partnership said: “We are currently experiencing a slight rise in the number of purse thefts and have had four in the last week.

“By taking a few simple steps you can help to protect yourself from being a victim of this type of crime.

“For example, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep your purse, wallet or handbag with you at all times and keep handbags closed and fastened as much as possible.

“Try not to overload yourself with bags and coats which may make it more difficult to keep track of your belongings.

“We are appealing for anyone with information on these crimes to come forward and help us to catch those responsible.”
