Police are teaming up with retailers in Buxton to crack down on shoplifting.
Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Team will be targeting the issue over the summer.
The campaign was launched after a small increase in the number of shoplifting offences in recent weeks and will see officers carrying out extra patrols in Buxton’s shopping streets, monitoring CCTV and working with retailers to identify offenders.
Buxton Retail Against Crime (BRAC) is supporting the crackdown and shop owners and staff will be able to report suspicious behaviour to each other and directly to police over a dedicated radio network.
Police are also urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity as soon as they see it by calling 101.
PC Mark Parkinson, from Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The aim of this operation is to make sure Buxton stays a safe and enjoyable place for people to visit and work.
“Although times are hard, there is no excuse for taking items from shops without paying for them and we will ensure anyone doing so is brought to justice.”
