College reaches final of national contest

Staff and students at Hope Valley College are one step closer to making their ideas a reality after winning through to the final of a national competition.

The School We’d Like competition, organised by Zurich Municipal and run in conjunction with The Guardian, invites students and teachers to develop an idea that would improve the quality of life for their school community.

Hope Valley College is now one of the final four in its category and stands the chance of winning £5,000 to put its idea for a water wheel to generate electricity for the school into action.

A team from the college will present their idea to a panel of judges at The Guardian offices in London on March 22, when three overall winners across the categories will be announced and awarded £5,000.

Fran Dainty, Assistant Principal, said: “We are delighted to have reached the final of The School We’d Like competition.

“The achievement is testament to the hard work put in by Aeden Butcher, Ivan Foy, Adam Townsend and Callum Havenhand, and we hope it encourages students to take a more active interest in engineering and architecture.”
