Colleagues to host charity football match in memory of Peter

Two kind-hearted colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service will host a charity football match to raise cash in memory of a friend who lost both his parents to cancer.

Adam Broadley, a team supervisor based at Heath Ambulance Station, and Rebecca West, a patient care assistant in Heanor are hoping to raise £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Care with the Peter West Memorial Trophy football match.

Peter West was Rebecca’s father in law, and her husband John is Adam’s best friend. Peter West died from lymphoma four years ago, aged 74, and Jon also lost his mother Janice to breast cancer at the age of 19, when she was just 53.

Peter spent much of his later life raising money for Macmillan Cancer Care through raffles and auctions and so his son has continued raising funds for the charity.

Following the success of the football match last year which raised a fantastic £3,000 for the charity, Adam and Rebecca want to raise another £2,000 to help even more people across the country who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Jon West, manager of the William Gregg Leisure Centre in Heanor, said that the Macmillan nurses made a huge difference to the lives of his parents when they were battling cancer.

He said: “Macmillan nurses were ever present during my mother’s illness, and the lengths that went to when supporting our family were amazing.

“When holding a charity event, Macmillan was the ideal charity to support, and I was overwhelmed by the response to last year’s match. It started out as an acorn and the result was unbelievable.

“It’s such a touching sentiment to name the match after my dad. He was a show off and he would have loved a whole event named after him.

“In this day and age, everyone has been impacted by cancer so help us to make a difference by coming to the match or buying a raffle ticket.”

The two teams will be made up of Adam and Jon’s friends from Butlins where they worked together as teenagers, versus Adam’s friends from Yorkshire where he grew up.
