FAST-FOOD and takeaway shops are urged to join a new bid to help reduce litter.
Chesterfield Borough Council’s voluntary code of conduct asks businesses to clean the area around their shop on a daily basis, reduce packaging and display anti littering messages.
The authority spends £500,000 clearing litter from streets and parks – while it’s estimated fast-food wrappers top the list of rubbish dropped in most UK cities and towns.
Any businesses signing up to the code will receive anti littering posters and stickers, be offered a chargeable waste collection service and a certificate.
Quarterly reviews will ensure criteria are being met.
