South Normanton Table Tennis Club is urging people to pick up the paddle and join in with the thousands of people each week who play this popular sport.

Based at Frederick Gent School, the club has given ten reasons why people should join the club and join in the fun.

These include: table tennis being good for your health; everyone can play; it is gentle on your body; it is a sport for life; it keeps you mentally sharp; you can play table tennis at anytime, anywhere; it does not cost a fortune to play; it is as easy or as hard as you want to make it and it is a great social sport so making friends is easy.

The club is always on the lookout for new members and it offers people from as young as nine-years-old the chance to learn a new sport or develop their skills all under the guidance and tuition of experienced local coach Mel Buxton.

The club is open to males and females from nine years old and individuals are able to attend their first session for free with sessions costing £3 each thereafter or they can opt to pay £25 for ten sessions - saving £5.

Equipment can be borrowed free of charge but should individuals have their own paddles they are asked to bring them along.

A regular participant at the club said: “I really enjoy attending each week. The coaches are friendly and my table tennis skills have really improved.”

Sessions are held every Wednesday in the dance studio at Frederick Gent School as follows: 4-5pm – 9-13 years, 5-6pm – 14 years and above.

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Cllr Ann Syrett said: “Just about everyone will have played table tennis, at some point in their life.

“There are so many benefits to playing this sport.

“There are no age limits or physical barriers and you can play it anywhere at any time and make new friends in the process – it is simply one of the world’s greatest sports.

“So whether you are nine or ninety, what are you waiting for, come along to the next session and join in the fun.”

The ethos of the club is very much about having fun, meeting new people and developing skills.

All abilities are welcome and no previous playing experience is required - just turn up and play.

The South Normanton Table Tennis Club has been set up thanks to Bolsover District Council and Bolsover District School Sport Partnership after they received an £8,302 grant from Sport England on behalf of the Bolsover & District Table Tennis Development Group.
