CHESTERFIELD: U3A find out about seaside holidays of yesteryear

Barbara Bond, the vice-chair, welcomed over 100 U3A members and visitors to a meeting of Chesterfield U3A.

The first job was to announce a change of speaker. Graham James, who was booked to talk about ‘Homeless Children in Romania’, was unexpectedly called overseas and will now give this talk on January 8, 2014.

In his place, Roy Stammers gave an entertaining talk on ‘The seaside in Victorian and Edwardian Times’. He brought along his lifetime collection of picture postcards to illustrate every aspect of seaside holidays in winter and in summer.

Business matters included an appeal for more photographs of group activities to use in publicity material, and the possible launch of new interest groups to focus on family history, health and well-being, meditation and vintage films. Come along to a coffee morning to find out more, on Wednesday, October 9, at 10.15am at the Saints Parish Centre Function Room in St Mary’s Gate.

The launch meeting for a U3A in Dronfield takes place at the Civic Hall, on Monday, October 28 at 2pm.

The next meeting of Chesterfield U3A is at 2pm in the Winding Wheel on Wednesday, November 6, when the speaker will be David Templeman on ‘Two Queens and a Countess’.
