CHESTERFIELD: Town’s U3A extends goodwill message to new venture in Alfreton

Chairman, Roger Watts, welcomed five new members to the U3A open meeting on July 3, though the overall number was slightly reduced from the usual attendance of around 200. Sadly, the members on holiday missed a very interesting talk on the ‘History of the Ashover Light Railway’ by Richard Booth.

Days out are still very popular with U3A members, and Margaret Armour put out an appeal for more helpers to run them. Theatre visits, too, fill up quickly. Special thanks, best wishes and a basket of exotic flowers were sent to Iris Cannon, who has just retired from the Theatre Group Committee. As with other branches of U3A, new Interest Groups emerge all the time in Chesterfield U3A. Overseas Walking, Art Appreciation, and Health and Awareness were mentioned at this meeting.

The Chesterfield U3A wishes similar success to the new U3A in Alfreton, which meets for the first time on Thursday, July 11. The initial response to the idea of a branch there was warmly received, and eight potential Group Leaders have volunteered already.

If you’d like to find out more about U3A in Chesterfield, come along to one of their coffee mornings, 10.15am upstairs in the Spire Coffee Shop on August 7, or the next open meeting on September 4, 2pm in the Winding Wheel, when the speaker will be Graham Jones on ‘Homeless children in Romania’. Visitors are very welcome. Details from Kathryn Lambert 07415 427151.
