CHESTERFIELD: Town developments is topic of talk to Rotary club

President Mike Cudzich-Madry presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, held at the Olde House, Newbold, on October 18.

He welcomed the Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Paul Stone, and Chesterfield BC chief executive Huw Bowen, who were making their annual civic visit to the club. He also welcomed regular guests Trevor Sharpe, and Frank Clifford, past president of the Rotary Club of Bolsover.

Information boards circulated included: the club’s calendar of events, the club’s 91st charter anniversary at the Ringwood Hall Hotel on November 22, and Rotary’s national conference in Birmingham in April 2014.

The president reported that past-president David Windle’s Swimathon in aid of Kids ‘N’ Cancer had so far raised £2,440. David Windle responded by thanking everyone for their excellent support. For more details and to make a donation, go to www.justgiving.com/KidsNCancerSwim

The president also reported that the club once again sponsored the Chesterfield Junior Schools Verse Speaking Competition which this year was hosted by Calow Primary School on October 23.

The club was addressed by the Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Paul Stone, who explained that the Mayor’s Appeal this year was in support of three local good causes. These were Hope Springs Addiction Recovery Centre, the Nenna Kind Cancer Support Centre ‘Bus to Weston Park’ Appeal, and in support of local food banks. The president presented the mayor with a cheque for £100 towards his appeal.

Chesterfield Borough Council chief executive, Huw Bowen, then gave an interesting update about the current developments in the town and explained that the borough council had adopted a challenging strategy to invest its way out of the recession. Following a varied question and answer session the president proposed a vote of thanks to the civic guests on behalf of the members.

Past president Ian Gaunt proposed the closing toast.

The after-lunch speaker at the next meeting tomorrow (Friday) is Lucy Nickson, the chief executive of Ashgate Hospice. Speaker host is Bryan White and duty Rotarian is Stuart Whitby.
