Chesterfield students get closer look at policing

Officers from the Holmebrook and Rother and Walton and West Safer Neighbourhood policing teams spent time with the students on a BTEC Level 3 course, specially designed about public service workers.

PC Dave Randell and PCSO Darryl Hegarty covered a number of different topics with the group including how the police work alongside other public agencies to help make communities safer, and the welfare aspect of the role.

They included case studies and a role play scenario where a student simulated stealing something from a supermarket and learners were able to observe the arrest procedure and subsequent criminal justice process.

Finally, the officers went through the recruitment processes for both police officers and PCSOs, and talked about opportunities to volunteer through the police cadet scheme and Special Constabulary.

PCSO Darryl Hegarty said: “It was a good opportunity for us to meet some of the students, talk about the work police officers do and run through some real life case studies and scenarios.

“We were able to give them the opportunity to ask questions, discuss their own perceptions about the role and offer advice on careers within the policing service.”
