CHESTERFIELD: Rotary Club is given an insight into struggle of seaside towns

President Mike Cudzich-Madry presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold on Friday, July 26.

The president reminded members that numbers were limited to 50 for the club’s annual barbecue which was being kindly hosted by past president Bryan and Heather White at their home on Sunday, August 18, 12.30pm for 1pm.

Following a members’ ballot the president revealed that the junior vice president for 2013-14 would be past-president Geoff Mitchell.

The guest speaker was local historian Godfrey Holmes who is a regular contributor to the Reflections lifestyle magazine. He gave a fascinating glimpse of the current state of England’s seaside resorts. Much loved during our childhood, he revealed that seaside towns are currently struggling to find a viable proposition that would encourage regular visitors other than for just day trips and short breaks. Rtn Keith Hutchinson proposed the vote of thanks.

John Moss proposed the closing toast.

At the next meeting tomorrow (Friday) the after-lunch speaker is Rtn Mike Hyman on ‘New Proton Treatment for Prostate Cancer’. Speaker host is Cyril Bates.
