President Jim Haggarty presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold. He welcomed regular guest Frank Clifford, past president of the Rotary Club of Bolsover.

Members were given a further chance to volunteer for duty at the Eckington Classic Car and Bike Show, which is the club’s next big charity event of the year being held on Wednesday, June 12, from 3pm to 8pm.

The after-lunch speaker was Andrea Hooley, the corporate and business manager for the charity Kids’n’Cancer UK, which supports children with life-saving Proton Therapy treatment for cancers and tumours that are not funded for by the NHS. She gave a presentation on the innovative plans to run a first-ever fund-raising Chesterfield Marathon in June 2014, which could also see thousands of people visit the town for the event. Volunteers were being sought from various local organisations to help on the day.

Rtn Mike Hyman, who is also founder of the charity, answered members’ questions and revealed that a launch event was being held at the Casa Hotel on Friday, June 14. For more information go to http://www.kidsncancer.org.uk/

The closing toast was proposed by past president Cyril Bates.

The next meeting tomorrow (Friday) is the monthly business meeting and will be chaired by president elect Mike Cudzich-Madry in the absence of president Jim Haggarty who is attending the annual charter celebration of the club’s sister organisation, the Inner Wheel Club of Chesterfield. Duty Rotarian is Peter Strelley.
