Mrs Chris Smith, the president of Nightingale Probus, welcomed 44 members to the June meeting, held at the Olde House, Chesterfield.
One minute’s silence was held in memory of Mrs Gwenda Rhodes, who died last month and was a past president of the club.
The speaker was Mr Roy Yates, who gave a fasciunating talk on the origins and history of place and surnames. Chesterfield being the open ground where a big fortress could be built. All the members present had their surnames explained which proved most interesting. It seems that before 1066 there were no surnames. Roy was happy to answer questions and was thanked by Mrs Shirley Slack.
The raffle made £40 for club funds.
