The Rev Richard Harris gave a blessing and said grace before civic dignitaries and councillors from around Derbyshire, family, friends, members of the appeal committee and volunteers tucked into dinner.

As a bonus to the fundraising dinner, the Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, Cllr John Burrows, used his auction skills to extract further funding to boost the appeals coffers.

Entertainment was provided by musicians The Buddies and a disco.
