An Auschwitz survivor told her extraordinary story at an event in Chesterfield to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Born in Czechoslovakia in 1923, Iby Knill was sent to Auschwitz in June 1944 after a spell in a Hungarian prison, interred as an illegal immigrant.
Iby took part in a question and answer session at Chesterfield Town Hall to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 24.
Town leaders also signed The book of remembrance, which will be in the main reception of the town hall until Thursday, January 31 for residents to sign.
Cllr Sharon Blank, Chesterfield Borough Council’s executive member for customers and communities said: “The Holocaust is such an important part of our history and I hope people will come along and take part in the events organised by the Borough Council and the North Eastern Derbyshire Hate Crime Consultative Group to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.”
