THE humble pub is the very cornerstone of a community.
They are a place for celebration, gathering with friends, often home to sporting teams or bands and a fundraising hub for local charities.
And with scores struggling in a tough economy, many closing down all around us, it is time to celebrate them.
Today the Derbyshire Times launches a new initiative, its first Pub of the Year competition, to help shine a light on the hundreds of fantastic watering holes we are lucky enough to have on the doorstep.
We want the public to nominate and then vote for their favourite pub across the patch so one will become the owner of this prestigious title, also winning branded prizes and coverage.
Said Times’ editor Nicola Megson: “Perhaps staff there pull the perfect pint. Or maybe it’s because service always comes with a smile.
“Whether it’s a roaring fire, blooming beer garden or scrumptious chips that makes your local the best you can shout about it by taking part in the Derbyshire Times’ first Pub of the Year.
“Our aim is simple, to toast local pubs and in that way hopefully help revive and encourage people to use them.”
To nominate a pub simply email email@example.com with your nomination and why, plus your name, address and telephone number.
Once nominations end, on Friday July 21, we will reveal a shortlist and put it to the public vote for another fortnight. A winner will then be revealed.
