BIG-HEARTED pupils at a Staveley-based school are due to receive a national award after they raised £10,000 in a year to support three wonderful worthy causes in honour of three former students.

Netherthorpe School, on Ralph Road, set up a co-ordinating charity committee to help patients under-going treatment for cystic fibrosis, boost funding at the Make A Wish Foundation and to help schooling in India through its Project Punjab.

Dep headteacher Peter Bamford said: “We decided to focus on three charities with strong links to our school and two of these were very poignant because they involved much-loved pupils who sadly passed away.”

As part of their fundraising drive, Netherthorpe School signed up to the national Giving Nation Social Action Awards to give their time and energy to tackle issues they felt strongly about.

Five youngsters and a member of staff, on behalf of the school, are due to be crowned the Giving Nation Challenge Winner at a presentation ceremony at HM Treasury, in London, on October 25.
