One of the High Peak’s oldest residents has received her fourth birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen on her 104th birthday.

Cissie Holden is celebrating her big day today (Tuesday)with family and friends at Welbycroft Nursing Home, in Chapel–en–le–Frith, where she lives.

Her son Roy Holden said: “She’s a very determined type of person.

“She lived on her own until she was 98, she’s been very independent.”

Cissie’s fighting spirit was such that in 1996 at the age of 86 she was made an honorary member of Buxton over 50s keep fit club, because her attendance was so good despite being the oldest member.

Roy added: “She always did a lot of walking, she used to live in Ashbourne Road and she used to walk to town and back when she was younger.”

Cissie, who is from Buxton originally, lived on Bennett Street with her late husband Harry in the 1950s, before moving to Kelsons Avenue.

Prior to getting married, she worked at Woolworths, in Spring Gardens.

Afterwards she was a meals supervisor at St Anne’s RC School.

Cissie is congratulated on reaching such a good age by her son and daughter–in–law, Roy and Mo, granddaughter and her husband, Julie and Shaun, and great–granddaughters Charlotte and Chloe.
