Bolsover District Council has received over £8,000 to encourage more 14-25 year olds to participate in sport and physical activity.

The £8,379 grant from Sport England will fund ten projects which will be delivered over six to eight weeks, many of which will start this month.

The cash will help fund projects that focus on table tennis, cricket, fencing, trampolining, rugby, bowls, volleyball and multi sport.

Two further projects incorporating karate and kickboxing will be delivered to encourage more Special Education Needs and disabled young people to participate in sport.

Sportivate is part of the Sport England “Places People Play” initiative and forms part of the Olympic and Paralympic legacy programmes.

Sportivate aims to increase the number of “semi sporty” young people aged 14-25 years become involved in regular sporting activity within their local community.

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion Cllr Ann Syrett said: “It is great that we have been able to secure this additional funding as we try and get more people active and playing sport.

“Over one-hundred and forty young people participated in our previous Sportivate sessions and we want to replicate this success by providing activities and sessions in sports that people want to play with their friends and compete in.”

The activities will be delivered by a range of partners including schools, Sporting Futures and local sports clubs who will offer a range of sports, ensuring that there really is something for everyone.

In the first six months of the Sportivate programme more than 1,200 young people in Derbyshire participated in one of the many sessions on offer.

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “We’re delighted that so many young people in Derbyshire have been inspired to get involved in sport through Sportivate. This is what the Olympic and Paralympic legacy is all about and it’s fantastic to hear about all those finding a new passion for sport.”
