A TEENAGER was under the influence of drugs when his car crashed and caught fire, Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard.
A Vauxhall Corsa driven by Sam Walker ran into a road sign on Derby Road, Chesterfield, in the early hours of one morning.
Police saw the damaged vehicle at Alma leisure park and noticed Walker’s speech was slurred and he smelled of drink. He told them he had driven to McDonalds following a night out.
Sarah Haslam, prosecuting, said Walker was arrested and was under the drink-drive limit but cannabis was picked up during a blood test.
Walker, 18, of Hardings Close, Kirk Ireton, near Wirksworth, admitted driving while unfit through drugs on July 20. He was banned from driving for 18 months and handed an 8pm-7am curfew for eight weeks with £85 costs. Annette Thomas, defending, said Walker had since lost his job and the offence has been a wake-up call to stop smoking cannabis.
