Campaigner calls for safety measures on road after deaths

The motorbike, which was travelling from Matlock towards Chesterfield on the Slack Hill road, hit a wall just before 11.35pm last Wednesday.

The 23-year-old rider, Daniel Green, of George Street, North Wingfield, and his 22-year-old passenger, Jamie Lynch, of Chesterfield Avenue, New Whittington, were thrown from the blue Honda motorbike and suffered fatal injuries.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Road safety campaigner Becky Carline, of Kelstedge, called for more safety measures on Slack Hill in light of the tragedy.

She said: “I think the speed limit should be lowered and it would be good to see flashing traffic signs warning of hazards.”

Derbyshire road safety partnership – which is overseen by the county council – said seven people have been killed or seriously injured in five separate collisions on Slack Hill since 2009.

A spokesman for the organisation said: “We’re working with our partners Derbyshire police who are trying to establish the circumstances of the crash.

“Once we know what caused the crash, we’ll have a clearer idea of any action that may need to be taken.

“Reducing road deaths and injuries involving motorcyclists is one of our key priorities.”

Floral tributes have been left at the site of the smash.

One simply reads: “Rest in peace, lads. You will be missed.”

Inquests into the two deaths were opened and adjourned at Chesterfield coroners’ court on Monday afternoon.
