A Hurdlow pub’s ghostly reputation has reached America, after it has been branded “the most haunted in England” by a US magazine.

The eerie antics at the Bull i’ th’ Thorn, on Ashbourne Road, were featured in a three-page spread in the September / October edition of Heart of Ohio.

Landlord Michael Coleman is relishing the spooky status, which marks his two-year anniversary running the bewitched bed and breakfast, after he moved in on Halloween 2011.

“All sorts of things have happened,” explained the proprietor of the paranormal pub. “Sometimes we hear sounds, like a voice or footsteps in the room above the bar.

“In photographs, you can sometimes see a blueish figure of an eight-year-old girl near the fireplace. A psychic told me her name was Jenny and she died in the plague.”

Michael explained he shared his spooky stories when he met the editor Diana Coon when visiting friends, in Mansfield, Ohio, last Christmas.

Established in 1472 on the Roman road between Buxton and Ashbourne, the Bull i’ th’ Thorn has over 500 years of history.

The terrifying tavern, which is adorned with original Tudor beams, medieval knight statues and taxidermy, is popular with ghost hunting events from around the country.
