Businessman to bike for cancer charity

Derbyshire businessman and developer Peter Gadsby is embarking on a charity cycle ride later this month as part of a regional campaign to raise £1m in aid of breast cancer research.

Peter, who is a keen cyclist, will be one of a team who will take on the 1,400-mile endurance ride around the four points of the compass in Great Britain in just 15 days, as part of the Life Cycle 6 ride.

The Life Cycle 6 bike ride is to raise money for breast cancer research for The University of Nottingham. The target is to raise £1m to enable the University of Nottingham to detect cancer early, stop cancer from spreading and develop personalised treatment for cancer sufferers.

He will travel from Lizard Point to Lowestoft Ness and on to Ardnamurchan Point and Dunnet Head.

Peter is doing two legs of the route, which totals around 200 miles in just two days, as part of the campaign that has raised more than £2m for a number of good causes to date.

This fundraising effort in aid of breast cancer research is particularly close to Peter’s heart, with several close friends and colleague having been diagnosed with the disease over the past couple of years.

Peter said: “Breast cancer is the second most prevalent cancer globally. In the UK alone, around 58,000 new cases are diagnosed every year and at least one in eight women will experience the disease in their lifetime, which is a staggering statistic.

“I’ve done a lot of charity cycle walks and rides in the past, but this year’s Life Cycle in aid of breast cancer research is a cause very close to my heart as several close friends and colleagues have been battling the disease in recent years.”

Peter is well-known for putting his fitness to the test in the name of charity. He has raised more than £120,000 for charities including British Heart Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK, and many others. In November 2008, he joined 1,000 other hikers for the 17.5-mile High Peak Trail Winter Challenge Walk. And less than a year later he swapped the hills of Derbyshire for the Sinai Desert in Egypt for a sponsored cycle ride.
