A local author has been nominated for a prestigious literary prize for his latest novel set in Sheffield.

Sunjeev Sahota, who is originally from Chesterfield, is on a four-person shortlist for The Sunday Times/Peters Fraser & Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award 2015.

He has been nominated for his critically-acclaimed book The Year of The Runaways, a story about immigrants who come to Sheffield from India in search of a new life.

The novel - Mr Sahota’s second - has already been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and has been described by judges as ‘a story of dignity in the face of adversity and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit’.

For The Sunday Times award, he is up against Ben Fergusson for The Spring of Kasper Meier, Sarah Howe for Loop of Jade and Sara Taylor for The Shore.

Award judge, author and previous winner Sarah Waters said: “This is a wonderful line-up of books from four extremely talented writers.”

The winner will be revealed on December 10.
