PLASTERING student Scott Jacques is building for a bright future after gaining success in the regional heats of the UK’s biggest construction skills competition.

The 22-year-old, from Chesterfield, took first place in the new entrant plastering category at the East Midlands heats of SkillBuild, hosted by West Nottinghamshire College on Tuesday, 23 April.

Aimed at finding Britain’s best trainee tradesperson, the competition saw 120 students from 20 colleges compete in a wide range of craft-based challenges including bricklaying, cabinet-making, carpentry, joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, and floor and wall tiling.

Scott had five-and-a-half hours to plaster a section of plaster board before fitting various moulds and decorative covings to it – all under the watchful eyes of the judges.

But after shrugging off some early nerves, he produced a smooth piece of work that cemented top spot.
