Apprenticeships are on the up

New figures have revealed an increase in the number of apprenticeships across the county.

The data shows 9,100 people started apprenticeships in Derbyshire between 2011 and 2012 – an increase of 17.5 per cent on the previous year.

Business secretary Vince Cable said: “Whenever I speak to companies, a lack of trained workers is a frequent concern.

“These welcome figures mean we are starting to turn the tide.”

David Way, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, which released the data, added: “I am pleased these new figures confirm that apprenticeships are increasingly popular.

“Apprenticeships have much to offer and by working closely with employers, we have come a long way in raising quality standards.

“Our immediate and continuing focus is on growing apprenticeships for people aged between 16 and 18.”
