A CEREMONY to open the newly restored Markham burial ground was held 100 years to the day since Rosa Markham became the first person to be buried there.

Markham family members from as far as Ottawa, Canada, arrived at Tapton Golf Course, Chesterfield, for the rededication and were joined by Chesterfield’s mayor Cllr Peter Barr, the council leader, Cllr John Burrows and local historian and author Tony Hallam.

Cllr Barr said: “The Markham family played a very significant role in Chesterfield’s industrial heritage so it was a great honour to be here today for the opening and dedication ceremony and to meet members of the Markham family.”

The £11,000 restoration project, which began last September, was funded by the Markham family, with contributions from Chesterfield Borough Council, who own the site, and Sheffield International Venues.
