Organisers of New Mills carnival are hoping for good weather for this weekend’s annual event, which promises a bumper programme of events.
This year’s carnival takes place on Saturday with the floats and foot characters taking part set to reflect the theme of films.
New Mills Brass Band is among those providing music for the parade, which will also feature walking groups from all the local schools and community groups and the High Peak’s best known dance troupe, The Billerettes.
The carnival committee will also be welcoming visiting royalty from across the area.
The procession starts at 1pm from the junction of High Street and Meal Street before winding its way through the town centre, ending at Newtown Recreation Ground (behind Swizzels Matlow) where there will be a new fairground for this year.
There will also be a display of owls, an entertainment arena, circus skills workshops, food stalls, a giant inflatable assault course, craft stalls, a licensed bar and more.
This year, judging of the walking groups and floats will take place during the carnival with certificates and prizes being handed out after the parade on the fete field. This will allow the judges to see the entries as they are intended to be.
The fancy dress and best dressed pram competitions will be judged on the field arena after the parade and the best dressed house and best scarecrow will be judged tonight (Thursday) between 6pm and 8pm. The best dressed shop/establishment will be judged tomorrow (Friday) between 6pm and 8pm. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 07794 545166 or 07973 828723 for more details.
Also new for this year is a carnival after-party in Torr Vale Mill, featuring local bands The Beachcombers and Ace Tone Revival. Tickets for the after-party, costing £6, are available from Priscilla’s shop on Market Street.
All proceeds will help fund next year’s carnival, as the committee are fundraising for new bunting to brighten up the town centre for festival and carnival time.
