A teen who believed she was banned from her school prom due to low attendance after battling cancer has attend the ball – and she did do it in style after ‘overwhelming’ community donations.

Thousands of online supporters rallied behind Emily Bennett, 16, after Springwell Community College, in Staveley, allegedly said she was not allowed to attend her Year 11 prom.

Her family took to Facebook to criticise the school and a petition was launched online, which was signed by 7,820 people in total.

But Emily and mum Andrea met with headteacher Ian Wingfield and accepted the ordeal was a communication breakdown. The community dug deep to show support and donated a dress, jewellery, a make-over and hair styling. A group of Staveley businessmen even paid for a limousine to take Emily to the prom, which took place in Sheffield yesterday.

Emily, of Markham Road, Duckmanton, who is now in remission from leukaemia, said: “It means so much that people have been so supportive and so generous.”
