A COUNCILLOR had a shock after he was caught up in a frightening bomb scare.

John Walker and his wife Angela were clearing the home of an elderly aunt who died recently when they came across a brown-paper parcel.

They unwrapped it, only to find it contained a hand grenade, complete with pin.

Seventy-year-old John, an Alfreton councillor and former town mayor, said: “It was rather shocking to find this.

“We were just cleaning so we didn’t expect to come across a grenade.”

Police and bomb disposal experts were called to the house in Derby – but the bomb was found to be safe.

John, of Ley Gardens, Alfreton, added: “We’re not sure how this grenade came to be in my late aunt’s home.

“However, we do know my late uncle did save war memorabilia so he may have added the grenade to his collection by mistake.”
