Environment watchdogs are appealing for witnesses to help them catch fly-tippers who are blighting Bolsover district with illegally dumped waste.

Bolsover District Council is running a campaign to stamp out the problem and its environmental team wants to hear from anyone who may be able to bring these large scale litter-louts to justice.

A council spokesman said: “Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste on public or private land. Fly tipping is a crime that blights our communities. It’s unsightly, can be hazardous and can lead to injuries both to the public and wildlife and is costly to remove.

“We can take legal action against householders whose waste is tipped illegally which can end up with a fine of up to £50,000 and, or twelve months imprisonment for those found guilty of fly tipping.

“We are committed to catching and prosecuting offenders wherever we can.”

To report fly-tipping please report it on-line at http://www.bolsover.gov.uk/litter-a-fly-tipping.html or alternatively call the council Contact Centres on (01246) 242424 or submit an enquiry form.

The council website is publishing a ‘Fly tip of the Week’ showing pictures of what someone has dumped in the countryside or community.

If anyone recognises what has been dumped or knows who in the particular area has recently had work done that may have resulted in the fly-tipping, they can contact the council confidentially.

Those with information can complete the council on-line fly-tipping form or telephone (01246) 242424, stating the location and description of incidents.

The latest grot-spot identified by the council overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday May 28 and 29, was on Syday Lane at Barlborough, and is pictured.

A council spokesman added: “It looks like the waste is from a kitchen refit as it consists of old kitchen units or fittings and packaging from the new ones.”

Those with information are urged to visit and complete the council’s on-line fly-tipping form http://www.bolsover.gov.uk/litter-a-fly-tipping.html or telephone (01246) 242424 with details.
