A man from Belper is believed to have died while scuba diving in Spain.

It has been reported that Neil Anthony Fears, 51, failed to surface on Tuesday after diving on the WW1 shipwreck of the SS Stanfield.

His body was recovered about three hours after he was reported missing.

A Spanish police spokesman said: “Two pairs of divers set off around 11am. One pair returned.

“A diver from the other pair said that while he was underwater, he turned to his partner and realised he wasn’t there.

“The divers reported him missing and a specialist diving search team was deployed.”

A spokesman from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national on August 4 in Murcia, Spain. We are in contact with local authorities and are ready to provide support to the family.”
