BASLOW: WI members welcome Elaine Harrison as speaker on Elizabethan dress

Baslow WI members were given a talk on Elizabethan dress by Elaine Harrison. She explained that all the clothes were hand sewn, and to illustrate her talk produced her own hand sewn dress which was an exact replica of the medieval court dresses, heavily embroidered with interwined silver and gold thread on black velvet. No wonder she was invited to join the costume group at Hardwick Hall.

Members had brought along their own wardrobe favourites, ranging from exorbitantly expensive to youthful, flamboyant to no longer fashionable.

A walk on a bitterly cold day from the Bridge Inn, Calver, to beyond Calver Mill was led by president Lorna Wilson.

Baslow Sports Festival takes place on May 6 when the WI branch will be serving tea from 2pm to 5pm.

The branch will be holding a buffet lunch on May 8 at 12.30pm followed by a talk at 2pm by Malcolm Dungworth whose subject is Build Your Own Village Hall.

On May 20, there will be a geocaching walk at Longshaw, starting at 10.30am and led by Jan Maybury.
