This year the Bakewell Oxfam Supporters Group has successfully continued organising a variety of fund raising activities.

In May a theatrical evening presented by the Cotton Grass Theatre Company and the Steve Salfield Band at the Medway Centre was highly enjoyable and well supported. Over £600 was raised for Oxfam.

The next Oxfam event will be the Secret Gardens of Bakewell on Sunday, August 25. Each year the focus is on a group of gardens in a different part of Bakewell. This time the open gardens will be in the Milford, Coombs Road and town centre areas of Bakewell. Fifteen gardens will be open to visitors between 2pm and 6pm.

The gardens vary in size and character with interesting plant collections and some stunning views. This event gives visitors an opportunity to follow the garden trail around parts of hidden Bakewell and view some lovely private gardens which are rarely seen by the general public.

As an additional treat, homemade cakes and refreshments will be available upstairs at the Town Hall.

Trail maps with garden addresses will be handed out at garden entrances on the day. The garden trail and Oxfam balloons will be displayed to indicate the open gardens. A Community Transport bus will provide a free shuttle service around the route to and from the Information Centre.

There will also be Traidcraft, plant and jewellery stalls. One charge of £4 at any open garden entrance will give access to all the gardens.

Detailed information is available at Bakewell Tourist Information Centre and online from the National Gardens Directory.

The members of the Oxfam Supporters Group are grateful to those who kindly open their gardens for this event and also to the many people who give their help on the day.

Last year the Secret Gardens of Bakewell was supported by many local residents as well as large numbers of visitors from surrounding areas and raised £2606. Again all the money raised will go to support the work of Oxfam.
