Bakewell’s first female mayor dies peacefully

Bakewell’s first female mayor, and three times holder of the post, has died at a Bakewell residential home, aged 88.

Mrs Barbara (Bobs) Brooke-Taylor died peacefully on April 1, 2013 at The Old Vicarage Residential Home.

Mrs Brooke-Taylor, who was born in Kenya, moved to Bakewell in 1947 after marrying local solicitor Michael.

She was a proactive and revered resident for the entire 66 years she lived there, serving on the Bakewell Urban District Council and its successor body Bakewell Town Council, for over 26 years, until 1995.

In addition to serving on the Council, Mrs Brooke-Taylor was a member of the Parochial Church Council, its Treasurer and Bakewell’s first female churchwarden.

Mrs Brooke-Taylor is survived by her three children Geoff, David and Dot and seven grandchildren. Following a private cremation, a service of Thanksgiving and Appreciation was held at Bakewell Parish Church on April 11, with donations to the Royal British Legion, Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled and Bakewell Parish Church.
