A MATURE student has clinched a top award.

Aku Sharif, 30, of Chesterfield, was presented with a Regional Individual Award as part of Adult Learners’ Week.

Aku, who struggled to read letters before studying English at Chesterfield College, has started his own business and hopes to go to university.

David Hughes, chief executive of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, said: “Aku’s life has improved because of his commitment, enthusiasm and ambition.

“I hope others will be inspired by this story and see the role that learning can play to help them get a better life.”
