Arthur Scargill is to speak in Chesterfield against the European Union.

Mr Scargill, 78, will explain why Britain should vote to leave the union in June’s referendum.

Gary Matthews, of Labour Leave, said: “This is a real coup for Chesterfield. Arthur doesn’t do so many meetings these days and this will be a great opportunity for people all over this region.”

Mr Scargill was president of the National Union of Mineworkers between 1982 and 2002 and led the bitter year-long miners’ strike in the mid-1980s

The meeting, called the Socialist Case Against the EU – Why the Left Should Vote Leave, will take place at the Rose Theatre, Rose Hill, at 2pm on Monday.

It will be part of Chesterfield’s historic May Day event, one of the most popular May Day gatherings in the country.
