Art unveiled in Bakewell for Chatsworth reopening

Everyday objects turned into vibrant works of art are dominating the gardens of Chatsworth House, in Bakewell.

The exhibition, by Michael Craig Martin, features 12 large-scale sculptures, each is an immense line drawing in space, fabricated in steel and painted in a vibrant hue.

Inside the house, which reopened to the public for the new season on Sunday, Craig-Martin has applied his own approach to highlighting sculpture from the Devonshire Collection.

He has also selected portraits for the Old Master Drawings Cabinet.

Artist Jacob van der Beugel has also covered the walls of the north sketch gallery with 659 textured, handmade ceramic panels as part of a new exhibition.

The display has been hailed as ‘Chatsworth’s most important permanent exhibition since the creation of its sculpture gallery in 1832’.

Another addition to the arty attraction are ceramic blocks which have been flanked by the personal DNA profiles of the Devonshire family.
