Firebugs have struck at a Belper sports club – causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Yobs broke into the grounds of Belper Meadows Bowls Club and burned down one of the shelters along with six benches and 30 chairs.

Members of the club, which is based at Christchurch Meadows, have been left devastated.

A club spokesman said: “Our remote location means that outbuildings and their contents cannot be insured so we face a loss of facilities unless replacements can be donated.”

Police have confirmed they are treating the incident – which happened in the early hours of Saturday – as arson.

The club also suffered at the hands of arsonists in 2009.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the crime should call Derbyshire police on 101.
