ALFRETON: WI members are given a talk on Cedar Wildlife Centre

Members of Alfreton WI have enjoyed many events since their last official meeting in July. These include an outing to Temple Newsam with community transport, a private evening visit and retail opportunity at Bon Marche, Alfreton, store, a sunny traditional cream tea in a member’s garden, and, on a slightly chilly evening, a wonderful barbecue hosted and prepared by a hard-working member. The branch had a stall, for the first time, at the Party in the Park, where members made new contacts, introduced some happy youngsters to rag rug making, and startled a few folk with non-singing butlers. Triumph of the summer was winning two cups at Bakewell Show for the co-operative crafts competition.

At the September meeting the branch welcomed a prospective member new to the area.

An interesting talk was given by Phil Else of the Cedar Wildlife Centre. His animal and bird rescue centre has taken over his garden and outbuildings. He is very fortunate in his wife, who has empathy with wild creatures. She can calm injured birds and animals, and stitch and treat their wounds. When possible, the birds and mammals are released into the wild or special nature reserves, after recuperation.

The Alfreton WI meet monthly at Firs House Community Centre and welcome visitors and new members. Phone 01773 832349 for more information about meetings.
