World class cyclist, Adam Yates, said he is relishing the opportunity to race in front of the crowds in Yorkshire ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire this weekend.

The race, in its second year, takes place on the 29th April and runs until the 1st May. The Tour will see the return of some of the world’s best cycling teams in the world to take part in one of the biggest cycling events in the UK calendar.

Ahead of the race, the Great Britain and ORICA-GreenEDGE cyclist took some time away from training to visit the Yorkshire Bank Bike Library in Doncaster. The bike library is one of 22 Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries in the region, a joint initiative between Yorkshire Bank and Welcome to Yorkshire that has the clear goal of providing every child in Yorkshire with free access to a bike.

During his visit Adam Yates, of ORICA-GreenEDGE, said: “I heard from cyclists taking part in the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire that it was a fantastic event. There’s something special about racing in your home country and I can’t wait to get started.”

Earlier in the day Yates was on hand to help deliver bikes donated by the public to the Yorkshire Bank Bike Library in Doncaster to see first-hand how the initiative is benefitting the local community. Adam dropped off the bikes in the recently commissioned Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries van ‘Brian’, named after the legendary Yorkshire cyclist Brian Robinson.

Yates added: “I think the Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries is a fantastic idea. It’s great that the people of Yorkshire can donate their old bikes so that they can be re-distributed to the public. Hopefully watching the pro’s cycle through Yorkshire will encourage more people to come down to Bike Libraries like the one I’m at today and get involved in cycling.” Yorkshire Bank’s commitment to cycling extends beyond this ground-breaking grassroots initiative, sponsoring the coveted race’s sprinter jersey as well as their involvement in the final stage of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Yates confessed that he would love to be in the running for the coveted Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries jersey, adding: “It’s been great to visit Doncaster today, it will be the finish line to Stage 2 and I’m hoping to lead the charge for my team.”
